History of The First National Bank The genesis of the First National Bank of Danville is 1856 when two Danville merchants, John L. Tincher and Joseph G. English received an assignment of the assets of a stock security bank owned by Daniel Clapp. The bank was reorganized in 1857 and was first located in a small one room cabin near what was then Redden Square in Danville and is now the Courthouse Square. The bank was first known as the Tincher and English Bank. Mr. English was the first president of the Bank and served as such until 1899. In November, 1862 the United States Banking Act was passed by Congress and immediately after that the Tincher and English Bank applied for a new charter. On October 26, 1863 the new national charter was issued and the Tincher and English Bank became the First National Bank of Danville. The First National Bank of Danville currently holds the 10th oldest national charter in the nation and the oldest in the State of Illinois. The five original shareholders of the Bank were: John L. Tincher, Joseph G. English, Eben H. Palmer, William I. Moore and Benjamin Crane. In 1869 the Bank moved from its one room log cabin to a new two story building just on the West side of Courthouse Square. Several years later two additional floors were added to the building. In 1916 the Bank began a major expansion project. Eight additional stories were added to the bank building and when it was completed in 1918 Danville had its first "skyscraper." This building remained the home of the bank until 1955 when the bank moved back to the site of its original location on West Main Street to a new two story building. In 1985 the bank moved once again to its current location in Towne Centre. With the advent of branch banking in Illinois, the first motor branch of the bank opened at the corner of Main and Walnut Streets in 1976. The bank’s second branch at the corner of Gilbert and Fairchild Streets opened in 1981. In 1993 the bank opened its third branch on Liberty Lane on Danville’s North side. The bank obtained a presence in Westville in 1995 when the First National Bank of Westville merged into the bank. In 2001, The First National Bank of Danville established a presence with limited services in Liberty Village at 3220 Independence Drive, Danville. On August 25, 2005, American Savings Bank merged into the First National Bank of Danville adding a presence in South Danville. Our newest location at 2750 N. Vermilion opened in October of 2006. In 1977 Lyle Campbell led a group of investors and purchased the Bank. After twenty three years of ownership Lyle Campbell’s son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Kim Campbell, are committed to keeping the bank as Danville’s only locally owned and operated bank. As Danville’s first and oldest bank, First National was instrumental in Vermilion County’s formation and growth. Now, as Danville’s only locally owned and operated bank, First National remains committed to the continued economic growth of the county. Our shareholders, directors, officers and employees are proud of their heritage of providing the area’s best banking services from 1857 to the present, and they have pledged to continue to provide that same standard of excellence into the future.
